Atelier Summerhill (the art room at Summerhill) is a creative hub of activity. It’s like a laboratory, a place of research where children can explore, mess about, do projects, solve problems and express themselves. Atelier Summerhill functions as an open space for independent personal work and as a place for taught lessons. Taught lessons are planned based on the children’s and community interests, for example recent blocks have included Art and the Environment, Art and Politics, Art from Around the World, Art Outside, Survivalist Art for a Post Apocalyptic World and Life Drawing. We use all kinds of materials to make art, from rubbish collected on litter pick-ups to textiles. Older kids can also opt to take Art and Design GCSE.
